Triplets are written when a beat that is normally divided into 2, needs to be divided into three equal parts.

Here is one quarter note, 4 eighth notes and one quarter note.

Here is one quarter note, followed by 3 triplet eighth notes, 3 more triplet eighth notes and one quarter notes. The 2nd and 3rd beats each needed to be divided into 3 even notes. A small 3 is written above the triplet group.
